“We flat-out believed we could do it,” said an excited Redmond High head coach Jason Rimkus.
Following a Joel Hargin 4-yard touchdown run to cut Lake Washington’s lead to one point in double overtime, Rimkus called a two-point-conversion play to go for the win in a 3A KingCo football matchup last Friday night at Mac Field in Kirkland.
The Teryn Berry-to-Devon La Pierre pass to the left corner of the end zone worked to perfection. And pandemonium ensued on the Redmond side of the field as the players dashed toward the end zone after La Pierre scored to give the Mustangs a 28-27 victory.
Redmond, 1-0 in league and 2-3 overall, will continue conference play with a home game against Mercer Island at 7 p.m. on Friday. The game will be televised on HC/ROOT Sports. The Mustangs have won two straight games, including a 17-14 win over 4A Heritage on Sept. 23.
“It felt like slow motion once it left my hand,” Berry said of his toss to La Pierre. “It was great to get a win and celebrate with my guys.”
Added La Pierre: “It was the coaches’ trust in my quarterback Teryn to make the right decision. He threw the perfect ball to me, and it was straight excitement from there. It just showed the confidence we have in ourselves and the belief in our coaches and each other.”

Rimkus sent in two possible plays for the two-pointer: either a handoff to Hargin, or if the LW defense stacked the box, Berry could throw a fade to La Pierre.
“It was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of,” Rimkus said.
Redmond’s coaches have been preaching to their players to focus on “the next play and not allow the previous play to hold you back,” said Rimkus, noting that the players are determined to succeed on each play and feel that someone will find a way to make a big play.
Berry said the players will continue to display their level-headed demeanor this week and bring confidence, hard work and intensity to the field against Mercer Island.
Against LW, Berry scored on a 4-yard run to give the Mustangs a 7-6 lead in the first quarter. Pedro Menchaca converted the PAT and a pair of 23-yard and 32-yard field goals to extend Redmond’s lead to 13-6 after three quarters.
LW tied the score at 13-13 to send the game into overtime. Hargin opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run and Menchaca’s PAT put the Mustangs up, 20-13. LW stormed back and tallied two straight touchdowns to close out the first overtime and begin the second to go ahead, 27-20, before Redmond finished it off.
Redmond’s Taylor Buchanan took matters into his own hands and set the epic game into motion by blocking a punt and returning it to the 4-yard line to set up the Mustangs’ first touchdown after LW took a 6-0 lead.
Overall, Hargin ran the ball 34 times for 92 yards and La Pierre had two catches for 28 yards. Defensively, Hayden Poore had seven tackles, Sunny Sarkar had six tackles and one sack, Ben Nachmanson had five tackles and Hargin had five tackles and one fumble recovery.
