Fresh off their 27-0 shutout win against Garfield last Thursday, Oct. 15, the Redmond High football teem have the unenviable task of playing at home tonight against top-ranked Skyline in a 4A Kingco Crest Division contest on Senior Night.
Fueled by star quarterback Jake Heaps, who was recently selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, and athletes like receiver Kasen Williams and running back Nick Washburn, the Spartans (4-0 in league, 6-1 overall) have outscored their four league opponents so far this season 195-13.
The Spartans also feature one of the best defenses in the state, one that held high-powered Issaquah to just four first downs and 64 total yards during the first half of their 42-0 romp of the Eagles last Friday.
The Mustangs (2-2, 2-5) know they have their hands full, but with a crop of young players, tonight’s game should serve as a valuable learning experience against an elite-level football team.
“We are looking to play a four-quarter game, one in which we give a great effort every play, and play with great energy and emotion,” said Redmond head coach Mike Pluschke. “We have a lot of young players playing in our varsity games right now and it is valuable experience, but we need them to grow up quickly in this most impressive of conferences.”
After Redmond scored the Kingco upset of the year in Week 4 — a 24-21 defeat of then No. 6 Eastlake — it became apparent that anything can happen in Kingco football. Whereas Eastlake may have been the “gentle giant,” Skyline is Goliath.
Can Redmond pull off another giant-killing win?
“We know when we are healthy and we play with great effort we can play with anyone,” Pluschke said. “It will take a fantastic effort to upset the No. 1 team in the state. We have been working tirelessly on running our schemes to the best of our ability.”
Kickoff is set for tonight at 7 p.m. at Walter L. Seabloom Stadium.
