Youth rowers from the Sammamish Rowing Association (SRA) excelled at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. earlier this month with the men’s quad team placing fifth in the nation with a time of 6 minutes, 30.7 seconds.
Three of the rowers from the fifth-place team — Nick Stilin, Daniel Rouhana and JD Laurence-Chasen — are from Redmond. The fourth member of the team is Kirkland’s Peter Dolan.
All four of SRA’s entered boats placed in the top 16 of their events and put up strong fights in each of their competitive races during the three-day regatta.
The men’s lightweight eight placed eighth with a time of 7:05.4, the men’s varsity four placed 15th (6:25) and the women’s varsity eight finished 16th (7:12.6). All three teams had rowers with Redmond connections. Redmond residents Sean Allen and Max Antono are members of the lightweight eight and Emma Wrights, a Redmond High School student, is the cosxwain for the varsity four team. Sasha Tilles, an Overlake School student, is a rower for the women’s varsity eight.
The U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships took place on Melton Hill Lake in Tennessee and featured more than 1,500 high school and junior rowers competing for just 18 national titles (nine for both men and women).
Redmond-based SRA is a nonprofit, community rowing program. It is one of the largest rowing organizations in the Pacific Northwest and the only club on the Eastside.
