The Redmond High girls’ and boys’ track and field team uncorked solid performances at last Friday’s 4A Kingco Championships at Eastlake High.

The top five performers at the league meet move on to the District II/IV Championships, which takes place at Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle this Friday, with races starting at 4 p.m.

On the boys’ side, the Mustangs placed eighth in the team standings and were lead by Mack Young, who garnered two league titles in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Neither victory came easy, as Young nipped Inglemoor’s Bernie Hagan at the wire 4:18.67 to 4:19.76, and only won by a little over three seconds in the grueling 3,200 with a time of 9:35.94.

Miles Hille placed fifth in the 800 with a run of 1:59.30 and Will Young, whose time of 4:21.88 missed the cut by .11 of a second in the 1,600, was the beneficiary of a late scratch to earn a spot at districts.

Redmond girls’ team placed sixth out of the 11 teams at the league meet, highlighted by the 400-meter relay team of Bailey Whittaker, Amy Pumputis, Darcy Hardwick and Katherine Smiley breaking a school record with their run of 49.71 seconds en route to a fourth-place finish.

In the 100, Smiley nabbed the fifth and final spot to the district with a time of 12.68.

Distance sensation Devin McMahon earned state berths in both the 1,600 (5:07.99, 3rd) and 3,200 (11:02.43, 2nd), both season-best times, with Garfield standout and 4A state cross-country champion Anna Dailey handily winning both races.

In the field, Katie Lord won the league title, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches and Rachael Axelrod’s shot put heave of 33-1.5 was barely enough to make the district cut. Darcy Hardwick missed making districts in the long jump by a quarter-inch as her best leap of 16-4 fell just short.

MUSTANG TENNIS FALLS SHORT AT LEAGUE TOURNEY

The Redmond High girls’ tennis team got outmatched by the tough field at the 4A Kingco Tournament last Friday at Skyline High School.

Redmond’s Raluca Ifrim beat Katie Coles of Inglemoor 6-2, 6-4 before being swept by eventual champion Angela Chen, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

The Mustangs’ other singles entry, Sarah Du, defeated Isabelle Nguyen of Bothell in her opening round before losing a tough match to Skyline’s Alisa VanGrunsven, 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles action, Darien French-Owen and Jeneal Carter won their opener 6-4, 6-1 before struggling against Issaquah’s Mika Asaba and Sam Garrard in a 6-1, 6-0 loss.

Kelly Ren and Dana Simmons also won in the first round, 6-4, 6-3, before falling to Molly Knutson and Alyson Opitz 6-1, 6-3.

REDMOND LACROSSE BOUNCED, OVERLAKE BEGINS ITS RUN

It took two overtimes, but Roosevelt’s Ben Soukup scored the game-winner with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left on the clock to send Redmond packing in the first round of the Division II lacrosse playoffs, 5-4, last Friday.

For Redmond, Brad Bomberry scored twice and also scooped 13 ground balls. Joe Mernaugh and Tanner Champagne scored the Mustangs’ other goals and Nico Shewey had 13 saves in goal.

Redmond ends the season with a record of 8-5-0.

The Overlake boys’ lacrosse team, playing in Division I, starts its playoff run on Wednesday at 8 p.m. against Curtis High School at Curtis.
