Sometimes, you just need a great shot, and that’s the type of shot 15-year-old Devin Coney hit on July 2.
For three years, Coney has played golf. And for three years he has never seen his tee ball drop below the top of the cup. And after three short years of golf, Coney joins one of golf’s more exclusive clubs to hit an ace.
After the round, Coney admitted, “I was shocked it rolled to the cup. The flop never fails, right?”
Using a 56o wedge on the 76-yard par-3 second hole at the Jefferson Park Executive Par-3 course in Seattle, Coney hit a high tee shot that dropped left of the pin, and bounced right, rolling gently to the bottom of the cup. Luckily, the same hole was also holding a closest-to-the-pin competition, which Coney marked down as “0 inches.” His team mobbed him as Coney picked up his ball out of the hole.
Unfortunately for Coney, he was hitting on the second to last hole during the The First Tee coach-junior shootout, and couldn’t keep the momentum going. His team finished in second place to Redmond High team golfer Alex Marshall and The First Tee coach Collin Hershey.
After the round, The First Tee of Greater Seattle program director Evan Johnsen pointed out, “Pretty close to the hole, his closest-to-the-pin was a hard one to beat. Zero inches away, and in the hole from Devin Coney.”
Even though this event took place at Jefferson Park Golf Course, The First Tee of Greater Seattle holds Eastside classes at Crossroads Par-3 golf course, Willows Run golf complex, Tam O’Shanter golf and country club and The Blue Heron golf course.
The First Tee is an international youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people on golf courses, in elementary schools and at other youth-serving locations. The First Tee helps shape the lives of young people from all walks of life by using golf to introduce them to life skills and character education, including The First Tee Nine Core Values, like integrity, respect and perseverance, and The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits, like safety, vision and community.
