Trevor Guyton became the first Redmond High School graduate to be drafted by the NFL after the Minnesota Vikings took the University of California-Berkeley defensive lineman in the seventh round of Saturday’s NFL Draft.
Guyton, a 2008 RHS graduate who is 6-foot-3, 285 pounds, was in the living room of a family friends’ house in Philadelphia when he got the call from the Vikings. Guyton, who attended Evergreen Junior High in Redmond, was born in Philadelphia and grew up in nearby Laverock, Penn. before his family moved to Woodinville about 10 years ago.
“My dreams are on their way to becoming true,” Guyton said on the Cal athletics website. “I’ve thought about this my whole life. It’s finally fulfilled itself. I’m so glad I had a chance to be with most of my family, come back home to where it all began here. I’m just relishing in the moment right now. I’ve done a lot of work to get to this point and I’m going to have to do a whole lot more work after this point. I want to do a lot more than just seeing what it looks like. I want to do this thing big.”
Guyton, who has played both defensive end and defensive tackle in college, started all 13 games as a senior last fall at Cal and was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection.
“Trevor Guyton is a player that has a great deal of energy and passion for the game and is really excited for his opportunity at the next level,” Cal head coach Jeff Tedford said on the university’s athletics website. “He plays with a motor and is also a very good technician. He uses his hands well and plays with good pad level.”
Guyton, who has two older sisters and an older brother, will graduate from Cal May 12 with a degree in African American studies. He left for Minnesota on Thursday for the team’s mini-camp, which starts Friday. He will return to Berkeley for graduation and then travel back to Minnesota, where he will make his new home.
RHS fans will be happy to know that Guyton and the Vikings will be traveling to Seattle for a game against the Seahawks in November. The Vikings, who took Guyton with the 219th overall pick, will play the Seahawks Nov. 4 in a Week 9 matchup at CenturyLink Field.
“He has been fun to watch from afar and will be exciting to see play when the Vikings come to Seattle during the 2012 season,” said former RHS football coach Mike Pluschke, who coached Guyton when he played at RHS during the 2005-7 seasons. “He will be as good as he wants to be in the NFL. He has the dedication and belief in himself to have a very fruitful career. I am excited to watch him make his dreams come true.”
Guyton played both offensive and defensive line during his career at Redmond High when he garnered a lot of interest from several Division I college programs. He played in seven games as a true freshman at Cal before becoming a consistent force upfront for the Golden Bears. He started four games as a junior and started every game as a senior, when he led the team in sacks with 5.5.
During his senior season at Cal, he was second on the team in tackles for loss with 12. In addition, Guyton co-led the Golden Bears with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, including one he returned 19 yards for a touchdown against Fresno State in the season opener. He finished his senior campaign with 46 tackles, which was most among Cal’s defensive linemen and sixth on the team overall.
Former RHS linemen coach Mike Monan said Guyton had the most potential than any other athlete he ever worked with during his 20 years of coaching.
“The NFL is lucky to have Trevor,” he said. “He is going to be a workhorse, studying film to gain an edge on his opposition. There is no downside to Trevor.”
