Redmond High graduate Galen Squiers, class of 2007, now playing for the Saint Martin’s University Saints near Tacoma, pulled off the shot of a lifetime against Hawaii Hilo during a nonconference game last month.
Down 91-89 with five seconds to play, Squiers intentionally missed a free throw in the hopes that his teammates would come up with the rebound and tying putback, but Saints guard Justin Alexander was called for a line violation, giving Hawaii the ball.
The Vulcans heaved the ball down court, and Squiers, 1-for-14 from three-point range for the season, came up with a steal near the opposite free throw line and launched a 75-foot shot as time expired.
The ball hit the back of the rim and caromed in, giving Saint Martin’s their 11th straight win, an improbable 92-91 victory. The Saints finished their nonleague play with a 10-2 record.
Squiers, a first-team all-Kingco and second-team, all-state selection while at Redmond High, scored a career-high 16 during the game and also contributed with five assists and four steals coming off the bench.
His game-changing performance and winning shot, which has been billed as “the most dramatic shot in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history,” earned him “Player of the Week” honors from the GNAC and a presence on Youtube.

Squiers is currently a sophomore at Saint Martin’s and is studying Criminal Justice, with the hopes of pursuing a career in law enforcement.
