The Redmond High boys’ basketball team, recently moving up to a No. 7 ranking in 4A, polished off a 64-46 victory on Friday night at Newport in a Kingco league contest.
It was a team effort as fine defense held Newport to just 14 first-half points, and the Mustangs kept the foot on the gas with a huge 23-point final quarter to distance themselves from the Knights.
In total, five players scored in double digits, led by Leslie Ellis and Jason Harrington with 13 apiece, followed by Peter Hendron with 12 and Conner Floan and Kyle Sawtell with 11.
The Mustangs (4-2, 9-3) have won six of their last seven games and take on Woodinville tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
Lady Mustangs fall to Newport
The struggling Redmond girls’ team (1-5 in league play) dropped their fifth-straight league game to Newport last Friday, 44-36.
With both teams struggling offensively in the first three quarters and the Mustangs trailing 28-20, Redmond put up 16 in the fourth only to be matched by Newport, which had nine different players score in the win.
For Redmond, Makaela Hayward put in a game-high 13, with Madison Ohrt also reaching double digits with 10.
Overlake boys take down 3A Pirates
The Overlake School boys’ basketball team finished strong on Saturday afternoon at home, defeating the 3A Highline Pirates 50-45.
After leading 33-18 at the half and enduring a cold-shooting third quarter, the home squad made some key plays down the stretch to preserve their lead and keep Highline at bay.
The win improved the Owls to 6-7 overall.
Bear Creek teams routs Seattle Lutheran
Playing in a Sea-Tac 2B league matchup, the Lady Grizzlies routed Seattle Lutheran at home Friday night 46-23.
For Bear Creek, Madelyn Magee led with 11 points, with Nikki Peterson and Catherine Fernandez adding eight.
With the win, the girls improved to 3-1 in league play and 6-5 overall.
The boys proved equally as dominant in the nightcap game, as the Grizzlies stormed to a 40-19 halftime lead and never looked back.
Four players were in double digits for Bear Creek – Lucas Fernandez (15), Erik Domas (14), Collin Feight (12) and Jesse Leuenberger (12), as the team stayed perfect in league play at 4-0 and 10-2 overall.
