The Overlake School physical education teacher Justin Prohn has been named the new boys’ basketball coach at the school, according to athletic director John Wiley.
Prohn has coached basketball at every level at Overlake. He was a junior varsity and varsity assistant before earning the job after Wiley’s resignation, which came at the end of the 2009-10 season.
Prohn was the team’s assistant coach in 2006 when the team went 20-6 and finished fourth at the Class 1A state tournament. Prior to his tenure at Overlake, he coached at Mount Si High School.
“Learning from the teams that make deep runs into the playoffs as well as the teams that don’t is part of what it takes to be a successful coach,” Wiley said. “Justin is passionate about kids and basketball. No one will work harder to continue to make Overlake a successful program than Justin Prohn.”
After the Owls were eliminated from the Emerald City League playoffs last month, Wiley made the announcement that he was stepping down to spend more time with his family.
“After 15 years of great joy, relationships, and growth… I have a young family which is my priority,” explained Wiley. “They have been so supportive of the long hours, the time away in both the season and the summer — a necessary evil as a high school basketball coach. It is time for me to be there for them.”
Micah Orr, a foreign language teacher at Overlake’s Upper School, has also been selected as the new head coach of the boys’ cross-country program, replacing Pete Traube.
Orr has served as an assistant in the program last year and has experience running for Snohomish High School.
