Prep Report: Vikings tame Mustangs on the court

Thanks to a great defensive effort and cold shooting by the Redmond High boys’ basketball team, Inglemoor had no trouble taking care of Mustangs, 49-36, in a 4A Kingco contest Tuesday night.

The Vikings held the Mustangs to just six first-quarter points and 18 for the half as Inglemoor led by 10 at halftime and never looked back.

Leading the offense for the Mustangs was senior guard Josh Bircher with 10, followed by sophomore Jason Harrington with eight.

The Mustangs, who fell to 2-1 in league play and 2-2 overall, take on No. 6-ranked Garfield tonight at home at 8 p.m.

PUMAS’ STRONG FINISH DOOMS OWLS

The Overlake School boys’ team fell to the University Prep Pumas, 65-50, in its 1A Emerald City League home opener last Friday.

The Owls led by one at halftime, 21-20, but the Pumas responded with a tremendous offensive performance in the second half including a 25-point fourth quarter that helped keep the Owls at bay.

Nine different players scored for University Prep, led by junior post Kyle McEachran with 17.

Senior wing Trent Halvorson led the Owls with 14, followed by Cameron Lui with 13, during the Owls’ first loss of the season. They are now 3-1 overall.

KANGAROOS TOP GRIZZLIES IN UNIQUE MATCHUP

It was big school versus small school in a non-league boys’ basketball matchup featuring the 4A Lake Washington Kangaroos against the 2B Bear Creek Grizzlies on Wednesday night at The Bear Creek School.

Thanks to a strong defensive effort, the Kangs came back from a three-point deficit at the half and held the Grizzlies to just 15 points in the second half for a 61-51 win.

Senior guard Jamie Meyer led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Lucas Peterson with 12.

The loss was the Grizzlies’ first of the season as they fell to 4-1 overall.

JONES’ CAREER NIGHT NOT ENOUGH FOR MUSTANGS

Chandler Jones scored a career-high 29 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Inglemoor High girls’ basketball team edged Redmond, 61-55, in a 4A Kingco contest Wednesday night.

Inglemoor guard Taylor Peacocke scored 23 in the win.

Senior Marissa Pratt was saddled with four fouls early, but still managed to score 10, while the Vikings spread the ball all over the floor with seven players scoring four points or more in the game.

The hard-luck Mustangs now sit at 0-3 in 4A Kingco league play and 0-4 overall.

ELLIOTT’S BIG NIGHT PROPELS OWLS

Led by the 26-point performance of senior forward Jessica Elliott, the Overlake School girls’ basketball team had no trouble defeating University Prep, 47-30, in an Emerald City League contest last Friday.

Both teams started out ice-cold with eight total points in the first quarter, but Overlake caught fire in the second period and opened up a 12-point lead.

Maya Marder chipped in with 12 for the Owls, who improved to 2-0 in league play and 2-1 overall.

GRIZZLIES LAY GOOSE EGG IN WIN

The baskets must have seemed the size of thimbles during the first half of Monday night’s non-league matchup between Bear Creek and Northwest Yeshiva at the Bear Creek School, with the Grizzlies prevailing 41-34 in an unusual game.

The 613s scored just 11 points in the first half, but still led 11-10, thanks to the Grizzlies’ goose egg in the second quarter. But things heated up in the third quarter as both teams scored 14 points each before the Grizzlies used a 17-point fourth quarter to put the game away.

Bear Creek post Kendall Engelstone scored a game high 13, with Maddie Magee adding 11.

The Grizzlies won their first four games of the season are now stand at 5-1 overall, with their league season starting up in January.
