Prep report: Redmond falls to Prosser in football season opener, Juanita next

In a battle of the Mustangs to open up the 2009 football season, the Redmond High Mustangs traveled three hours east to play the Prosser Mustangs, and got routed 47-13 in a nonleague contest.

Prosser, a small town of about 5,000 on Interstate 92 between Yakima and the Tri-Cities, continued its winning ways with the season-opening blowout win.

Prosser is a combined 27-1 in the last two years, playing at the 2A level, with its only loss coming in the state championship final last season.

The visiting ‘Stangs got off to an inauspicious start as Prosser kick returner Matt Young returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a score.

A bright spot for the Mustangs was quarterback Michael Conforto displaying his ability to run the ball, with a game-high 20 carries for 120 yards including two touchdown runs of 13 and 5 yards.

The deadly Prosser duo of quarterback T.J. Finn and receiver Dominic Garza connected for three touchdowns, including a 61-yard bomb to open up the second half.

This week the Mustangs play their home opener against Juanita, a team coming off of its first winning season (6-4) in more than a decade.

The Rebels, the team Redmond coach Mike Pluschke coached before his current tenure at Redmond, return a top-tier running back in Jeremiah Laufasa, who finished third in Kingco with 950 yards as a sophomore.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. this Friday night at Walter L. Seabloom Field on the Redmond High campus.
