Prep Report: Redmond, Bear Creek runners earn medals at Nike Pre-Nationals

Redmond High senior runner Miles Hille placed second out of 137 athletes in the Varsity Division I 5K at Nike Pre-Nationals in Portland, Ore. last Saturday. Hille's time of 16 minutes, 2.97 seconds was just 12 seconds off the pace set by Enterprise senior Domenic D'Acquis.

Johnathan Stevens, a sophomore at Redmond, also ran well, placing seventh in 16:28.51. Jenna Sanders was the highest placing girl for Redmond, running 20:47.70 for 39th place.

For The Bear Creek School in Division III, Evan Simpson earned a medal, reserved for the top 40 finishers, running an 18:31.39 for 36th place. On the girls’ side, Joy Twentyman was the highest Grizzly placer, finishing 15th in 21:30.71.

OWL SOCCER ON A ROLL

The Overlake boys’ team is picking up right where they left off last year with a 5-0 Emerald City League win over Northwest School on Monday afternoon.

For the Owls, Gavin Mackinlay sparked the offense with a first-half hat trick on goals assisted by Henk Wolda, Grant Munoz and Erik Risa.

Risa put one in in the 73rd minute off Joe Dolack’s assist, and the final goal belonged to Rohan Kumar off a feed from Dean Poplawski.

Goalkeepers J.J. Cardenas and Jack Roberts combined for their team’s first shutout of the season.

The win kept the Owls’ perfect season alive at 5-0-0 (6-0-0 overall). In their five league games this season, the Owls have scored 21 goals while allowing just six.

BEAR CREEK BOYS SHUT OUT MOSES LAKE FOR 8TH STRAIGHT

The Grizzlies kept their perfect season going with a 4-0 non-league shutout of Moses Lake Christian on Saturday morning at Moses Lake.

Bear Creek came out firing with three first-half goals, the first by Mark Phillips in the 15th minute, assisted by Gabe Rongve, and Luke Blankenbeckler scored twice later in the half, assisted by Jesse Leuenberger and Lucas Peterson.

In the 58th minute, Will Stansell scored on Mark Phillips’ assist, and Jamie Clough earned the shutout.

With the win, the Grizzlies improved to 8-0-0 and remained at 4-0-0 in Sea-Tac 2B league play.

LADY GRIZZLIES DRAW WITH EVERGREEN LUTHERAN

In a non-league game last Friday afternoon, the Bear Creek girls’ team tied 1-1 with the Evergreen Lutheran Eagles at The Bear Creek School.

Morgan Rial scored first, assisted by Brittany DiGenova midway through the second half, and just five minutes later Evergreen Lutheran’s Katelyn Weber put in a free kick as the equalizer.

With the draw, Bear Creek’s overall record went to 2-2-3, and the Grizzlies remained at 2-0-0 in Sea-Tac 2B league play.

GRIZZLY VOLLEYBALL ROUTS RAINIER CHRISTIAN

The strong Bear Creek School volleyball team had no trouble sweeping Rainier Christian on their home court last Friday night, 3-0.

For the Grizzlies, Maddie Easley and Bethany Meyers led the offense with seven kills each, followed by Makena Schoene with six. Bear Creek also had aces aplenty as Michele Brown (six), Caroline Ptazynski (five) and Domonique DuBois (four) combined for 15 service aces in the match.

With the win, Bear Creek improved to 3-0 in Sea-Tac 2B league play and 4-0 overall.

REDMOND BOYS DEFEAT ROOSEVELT ON THE LINKS

The Redmond High boys’ golf team shot one of their lowest team scores in recent history as the top five Mustangs combined for just 171 strokes in their 171-206 win over Roosevelt last Thursday at Bear Creek Country Club.

Charlie Mroz led the way with a 1-under-par 35, followed by Cole Helgeson who fired a 37 and twin brothers Oliver and Lyle Rudnicki contributing 39s. Top finisher for Roosevelt was Anthony Laguardia who carded a 40.

MUSTANG FOOTBALL SHUT OUT BY WOLVES

Coming off two straight wins, the Redmond High football team was stymied 29-0 at Eastlake High last Friday in a 4A Kingco Crest Division matchup.

The Wolves scored 16 first-quarter points in the win, including a 23-yard fumble return by Colton Teglovic.

The Mustangs were limited to just 81 total yards for the game, 37 rushing and 44 passing.

With the loss, the Mustangs dropped to 0-1 in Crest Division play and 2-2 overall.
