Klug kept up his incredible sophomore season by finding the goal three times, in the 10th minute off a pass from senior Hakan Yagiz and in the 22nd and 60th minutes from two assists by Sky Tweedie-Yates. It was Klug’s third hat trick this season, during which Klug has scored a league-high 17 goals.

Goalkeeper Chap Grubb earned the shutout as the Owls improved to 11-0-0 in league play and 12-0-0 overall. The Owls can lock up the league title with a road win against University Prep on Thursday.

OWL VOLLEYBALL CONTINUES WINNING WAYS

The Overlake School volleyball team beat league rival Bellevue Christian on Wednesday Night, 3-1, in a 1A Emerald City League battle on the court.

Up 2-0 with game victories of 25-15 and 25-19, the Vikings battled back to take game three 25-18 before being edged out 25-23 in a down-to-the-wire game four to give the Owls the win.

For Overlake, Jessica Elliot and Lauren Ambielli led the offense with nine kills each, followed by Jessica Weisbly with five. The Owls had some signature service from Aubrey Devine and Kirsten Parris, who each recorded four aces, and setters Claire Bazely and Alex Weaver combined for 20 assists.

With the win, Overlake improved to 7-3 (10-4) and narrowed the gap between them and Bellevue Christian (8-3, 10-3) to a half-game.

Both teams trail undefeated Annie Wright (7-0, 10-0) and Cedar Park Christian (8-2, 8-2).

GRIZZLY GIRLS BLANK RAINIER CHRISTIAN

In a Sea-Tac 2B League matchup, the Grizzlies took care of the Mustangs on Wednesday night at Rainier Christian 5-0.

Jenny Price opened up the scoring in the 8th minute on a direct kick, and then Daniell Isbell put in a pair of goals later in the half. In the second half, Halle Coleman and Morgan Rial each contributed a score. Laurie Robinson, Tajel Mehta and Morgan Tompkins each earned an assist during the game as Bethany Linnenkohl recorded her fifth shutout of the season.

The win improved Bear Creek o 3-1, 6-6 overall.

SEVENTH STRAIGHT LEAGUE WIN FOR GRIZZLIES

The Bear Creek boys’ soccer team made the most of their long trip to Mount Rainier Lutheran with a 9-2 blowout win over the Hawks on Tuesday night.

Early in the first half of the Sea-Tac 2B League contest, the Grizzlies’ Gabe Rongve and Nima Abtahi scored to put Bear Creek up 2-0, but Hawks’ junior Nathan Haack scored twice in the 29th and 30th minutes to even things up.

The floodgates opened, however, as the Grizzlies went on to score seven unanswered goals.

Mark Phillips led the team with three goals, followed by Abtahi and Rongve with two, and Dillon Baker with one. Tom Postings contributed one goal and two assists, and five other Grizzlies each had one assist.

The win improved Bear Creek to a 7-1-1 record, 9-3-2 overall and narrowed the gap to one game behind Tacoma Baptist (8-0-1) for the league lead.

The Grizzlies play Tacoma Baptist on Thursday evening in Tacoma after the Reporter’s deadline.

MUSTANG SOCCER DRAWS WITH NEWPORT

With the regular season winding down, the Redmond girls’ soccer team desperately needed a win to get in good seeding position for the postseason, but came up just short of their goal as they tied 1-1 with the Newport Knights in 4A Kingco action on Tuesday night at Newport.

Both team’s defenses gave up nothing until the 66th minute, when Mustang forward Rachel Herron found the net off of Annika Hayman’s assist, but with 10 minutes left to play Newport’s Jami Shimada scored unassisted for the equalizer, with neither team able to score in overtime.

The draw kept Redmond above .500 in the Crest Division at 4-3-2 and 6-4-2 overall, as they currently sit in fifth place out of the 12 teams. The top six teams advance to the 4A Kingco playoffs.

LADY OWLS SCORELESS WITH BELLEVUE CHRISTIAN

The struggling Bellevue Christian Vikings, playing at Overlake, knew they had to play stellar defense to be competitive with the high-flying Owls, and they did just that as both teams battled to a 0-0 tie Tuesday night in a 1A Emerald City League contest.

Ceci Votta earned her seventh shutout of the year as the Owls’ record is now 10-1-1 in league play and 12-1-1 overall.

BEAR CREEK VOLLEYBALL WINS THRILLER

The Grizzlies won a wild Sea-Tac 2B League battle, beating the Rainier Christian Mustangs, 3-2, on Tuesday night at home.

After taking the first game 25-14, the Grizzlies narrowly lost game two 25-22, eked out a win 25-23 in game three, and lost game four 25-12 to set up a first-to-15 tiebreak, won by the Grizzlies in thrilling fashion, 15-12.

Both teams featured loaded offenses, as the top four hitters for Bear Creek combined for 38 kills in the match. Dominique DuBois led the team with 13, followed by Maddi Easley with 11, and Kendall Engelstone and Elizabeth Fernandez with seven apiece.

Setter Michele Brown recorded an incredible 41 assists and four service aces, while Bethan Meyer chipped in with five kills and three aces.

Mustang standout Mariah McHolland gave the Grizzlies fits with a season-high 20 kills, 14 digs, five blocks and three aces.

The win improved Bear Creek to 6-3 (8-4 overall) while the loss also sent Rainier Christian to 6-3 (6-5) with one game to go in league play.

MUSTANG SWIMMING SNEAKS BY LIBERTY

In what was by far the most tightly-contested Kingco swim meet of the year, the Mustangs had just enough to get past Liberty High School during Tuesday night’s swim meet at home, 93-92.

The Mustangs got off to a hot start, winning three of the first four events.

The 200 medley relay team of Allison Binkerd, Heather Harper, Sabrina Hseih and Keisha Chinn won in 2 minutes, 4.64 seconds, while Binkerd took the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 31.30 seconds and Harper won the 50 free in 26.38.

Harper then shattered her own state-qualifying time in the 100 fly with an impressive 1:00.84, and the Mustangs added wins in the 200 free relay (Kaley French, Ashianna Stoll, Stephanie Sze, Sabrina Hsieh) in 2:02.11, and Binkerd won the 100 breast in 1:17.81.

REDMOND TENNIS FALLS TO SAMMAMISH

On the strength of winning three of four singles matches, the Sammamish Totems defeated the Mustangs, 4-3, in a rescheduled 4A Kingco matchup on Tuesday at home.

Highlights for the Mustangs included No. 2 Jeff Jou making quick work of Benny Traiv 6-1, 6-0, and the doubles teams of Matt Lee/Scott Singleton winning 6-2, 6-0 and Joey Gregoritch/Paul Burke emerging victorious 6-0, 6-1.
