Prep Report: Owls, Grizzlies win holiday hoops tourney

The Overlake School girls’ basketball team and the Bear Creek School boys’ squad emerged victorious in the championship games at the Shot in the Dark Tournament, held at the Overlake School Tuesday, Dec. 22.

The Overlake School girls’ basketball team and the Bear Creek School boys’ squad emerged victorious in the championship games at the Shot in the Dark Tournament, held at the Overlake School Tuesday, Dec. 22.

After soundly defeating Auburn Adventist, 59-45, on Monday, the Owls were matched up in the championship final against the red-hot Lady Grizzlies, who had beaten Charles Wright in the opening round.

With defense at a premium, the Grizzlies held the Owls to just five points in the fourth quarter to force a 36-36 tie at the end of regulation. During overtime, the home team came alive for 10 points on the way to a 46-40 lead.

The Owls were led by Jessica Elliott with 15 points and point guard Maya Marder with 12.

For Bear Creek, senior post Tajel Mehta scored a season-high 21.

With the win, Overlake improved to 4-1 overall and Bear Creek fell to 7-2.

The Bear Creek boys used solid defense and an explosive offense to rout Overlake, 68-29. The Grizzlies held a 32-14 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Hot-shooting guards Jamie Meyer and Lucas Peterson each scored a game-high 24 points. Overlake senior Hakan Yagiz led the Owls with eight.

Bear Creek improved to 6-1 overall with the win, while Overlake dropped to 4-2.
