Prep Report: Mustang wrestlers slam Garfield, Kelly plows through Lady Wolfpack event

Highlights from the Garfield match included six wrestlers winning their bouts by pin, including Catherine Kelly at 119 (3 minutes, 5 seconds), Alex Shaw at 125 (1:07), James Carey at 130 (1:48), Brandon Long at 135 (3:47), Simeon Simov at 171 (4:46), and Joe Glass at 215 (1:20).

Kyle Steiner, at 160, defeated his opponent 16-10.

Kelly, the Mustangs’ only female wrestler, lit up the mats last weekend at the Lady Wolfpack Tournament at Jackson High School, dominating the field and winning the 119-pound title.

Kelly achieved a pin to go along with victories of 17-0 and 15-0 before squeaking by Federal Way standout Maria Manzueta 5-4 in the finals.

With her win, Kelly is now undefeated in her last 11 matches and has won two tournament titles since Jan. 22.

On the boys’ side, Glass finished the season 10-0 in league meets and 21-3 overall; Long is 8-2 in league and 20-5; and Simov is at 7-2 and 14-4.

The Mustangs will wrestle at the 4A Kingco Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Juanita High School in Kirkland.

GRIZZLY BOYS, GIRLS ROUT SAINTS

The Bear Creek School boys’ basketball team continued its dominance of the Sea-Tac 2B League with a 66-29 rout over Seattle Lutheran, at Seattle Lutheran, on Saturday night.

The Grizzlies (9-0 in league, 14-3 overall) led 30-17 at the half and never gave the Saints any opening down the stretch. The Grizzlies were led by the 22 points of Lucas Peterson, followed by 14 from Erik Domas and 10 by Aaron DiGenova.

Just before the boys took the court on Saturday, the Lady Grizzlies used a strong start to propel them to a 59-27 win over the Saints.

A solid Grizzlies’ defensive effort limited Seattle Lutheran to just three first-quarter points as Bear Creek jumped out to a 29-11 halftime lead.

Nikki Peterson led all scorers with a big double-double, scoring a season-high 16 with 10 rebounds, followed by Maddie Magee with 14 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.

The undefeated Grizzlies improved to 9-0 in league play and 14-0 overall.
