The Redmond High baseball team got it going on Monday afternoon with a 15-3 blowout over Issaquah to advance in the loser’s bracket of the 4A Kingco baseball tournament.
Seniors Nick Rothermel and junior Patrick McGrath both homered and drove in five runs combined, with junior Peter Hendron contributing a 3-for-4 night.
Michael Conforto, T.J. Whidby and Thomas Crosley contributed to the win on the mound for the Mustangs, who advance to another loser-out game this afternoon against Skyline, first pitch at 4 p.m. at Woodinville High School.
The winner of tonight’s game will face off against the winner tonight’s Inglemoor vs. Woodinville contest on Thursday for the right to play a team from the Wesco league for the third and final state berth from Kingco.
Mustang fastpitch falls to Eastlake in thriller
Defending their home turf, the Eastlake Wolves took a 5-4 deficit going into their final inning and turned it into a 6-5 win in a 4A Kingco Crest Division showdown on Monday afternoon.
Ashley Mitchell launched her fifth home run of the year as part of a 2-for-2 night as the Mustangs exploded for four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, only to have clutch hitting by the middle of the Wolves’ lineup push across the tying and winning runs in the seventh to avoid the upset.
The loss dropped Redmond into third place in the Crest Division at 7-5 (10-6) while Eastlake locked up the division title by going to 10-1 (15-2).
Mustang golfers keep streak going with record-setting performance at Newcastle
On a perfect spring afternoon, Redmond responded to the pressure of playing for the 4A Kingco League Championship and their 85-match win streak against a star-studded Newport team, defeating the Knights 210-216.
Senior captain Alicia Bies rose to the occasion, medaling for the first time in her final league match with a 4-over-par 40, followed by Kelly Kennewick’s 41.
Keira O’Hearn, last year’s medalist at Newcastle, shot 42, Stephanie Schoeppel carded 43 and Makayla Walker and Peyton Halstead tied for the final scoring spot with 44.
Low for Newport was state returner Hannah Christian and sophomore Isabel Chien with 42.
Redmond’s team score of 210 is the all-time record for lowest team score by any girls’ golf team at Newcastle.
The Mustangs take their perfect 10-0 league record with them to the District Tournament, which gets underway on Wednesday at Mount Si Golf Course, starting at 8 a.m.
