Heather Harper, a home-schooled senior that swims for Redmond High School, bettered her own record mark at the Sea-King District II Championships at the University of Washington Pavilion Pool last weekend and took the gold medal in the 100-yard breaststroke event, swimming the finals in 1 minute, 5.39 seconds, after swimming a district-record 1:04.83 in the prelims.
Harper also qualified for the 200-yard individual medley, placing second in 2:10.84 behind Ballard standout Annemarie Thayer (2:06.33).
Redmond’s 200-yard medley relay team of Allison Binkerd, Harper, Kisa Isobe and Emily Smith also made the state cut by .47 of a second, swimming a time of 1:54.43 to take 5th place at Districts.
In the 400-yard free relay, Redmond made the final heat and placed 6th, in 3:53.14.
The 4A state swim and dive championship finals will get underway at 11 a.m. this Saturday, November 13, at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.
GRIZZLIES EARN STATE BERTH
The Bear Creek volleyball team beat Sea-Tac 2B rival Evergreen Lutheran for the third time this season on Saturday to earn a trip to Saturday’s state tournament at the Yakima Sun Dome.
After routing Orcas Island in their opening match of the Bi-District volleyball tournament at Stanwood High School last Saturday, the Grizzlies lost a tough match that went the distance, 3-2, against Darrington, to set up a winner-to-state, loser-out showdown against Evergreen Lutheran.
The Grizzlies, who swept the Evergreen Lutheran twice earlier this season, punched their ticket to state with another 3-0 sweep via game scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-12.
In the pivotal game, Bethan Meyer had 11 kills, followed by Dominique DuBois with eight and Makena Schoene with seven. Michele Brown slammed six service aces and collected 29 assists for the Grizzlies (16-2).
MUSTANGS, GRIZZLIES RUN HARD AT STATE MEET
The Redmond High boys’ cross country placed 10th and the girls’ came in 12th out of 16 teams at the 4A State Championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco last Saturday.
The boys’ team was paced by sophomore Johnathan Stevens, who finished the race in 16 minutes, 17 seconds, good for 33rd place. Stevens was followed by senior teammate Miles Hille, who ended his high school cross country career with a 36th-place finish, with a time of 16:18.
Lewis and Clark senior Kenji Bierig won the meet in 15:09.
The Redmond girls’ team was led by Holly Young (19:43, 55th place), and also breaking the 20-minute mark was senior Jenna Sanders, (19:48, 60th).
The Bear Creek School boys’ team, which placed 11th in the state as a team, were led by Evan Simpson, who placed 43rd place with a time of 18:08.
On the girls’ side, Bear Creek junior Joy Twentyman ran a season-best 21:17 time for 17th place.
OWL GIRLS WIN, OPEN STATE TOURNAMENT ON TUESDAY
The Overlake girls’ soccer squad claimed the No. 5 seed to state after a 3-1 victory over the University Prep Pumas on Saturday in a district-seeding game.
Sophomore Quinn Phillips opened up the game for the Owls with a goal from Kelly Henschen, and later it was Phillips assisting Adrianna Gildner for the go-ahead goal. Phillips then added another late insurance goal for the Owls.
The Owls (14-4-2) will play their first-round matchup of the 1A state tournament against Ridgefield at Kalama High School on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
