The Redmond High baseball team kept its perfect 4A Kingco record intact with a thrilling, 5-4 come-from-behind victory against Ballard at Whitman Field in Ballard on Thursday afternoon.
Starter Peter Hendron, who gave up four early runs to the Beavers, helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Michael Conforto blasted his first home run of the season, a long, towering shot in the 6th inning, which proved to be the winning run.
T.J. Whidby earned the win in relief with two shutout innings, and Conforto notched his fourth save of the year, punching out two in the seventh to seal the win.
The Mustangs improved to 6-0 in league play and 9-2 overall. They next have a marquee matchup slated with Bothell (6-0, 8-2), the only other unbeaten team in Kingco, on Monday evening at 6 p.m. at Hartman Park.
Redmond girls win, boys fall to Garfield at track meet
The Redmond High girls track and field team outmatched Garfield on Thursday afternoon at Garfield High School, winning 89-60.
Winning for the Mustangs on the oval were Amy Pumputis (400 meters, 63.5 seconds), Allie Nichols (800, 2:34.20), Lila Rice (1,600, 5:41.90), Holly Young (3,200, 11:54.50). In addition, all three relay teams (400, 800 and 1,600) won for the Mustangs.
In the field, Jessica Kinssies took the shot put and discus events with throws of 34 feet, 9 inches and 88-7, respectively, with Logan Dougherty’s javelin toss of 76-6 good for a win.
Katie Lord cleared 5-3 on the high jump, Keiko Montenegro and Madeleine Harrison tied on the pole vault at 7 feet, and Darcy Hardwick’s long jump of 15-9.75 also garnered first-place finishes.
On the boys’ side, the Mustangs fell 85-59.
Highlights for the boys included Johnathan Stevens winning the 800 meters in 2:06.80, and distance specialist Miles Hille taking the 3,200 meters in 10:00.25.
Hurdler Sean Yang, a sophomore, won by a nose with a time of 17.7 in the 110 meter event, and the 400 relay team of Nick Rogers, Alex Binkerd, Curty Rusch and Sam Fayerweather emerged victorious in 46.9 seconds.
In the field, Tim Landowski notched a new personal best discus throw of 106-10, with sophomore Carl Minifie doing the same in the javelin with a heave of 118-4.
Paul DeWater’s 35-5 triple jump was also good enough for first.
The track teams’ next meet is at home against Bothell next Thursday, start time 4 p.m.
Mustang tennis falls to Lake Washington
The Redmond High girls’ tennis team was swept in singles action en route to a 5-2 loss to the Lake Washington Kangaroos on Thursday afternoon in a non-league match.
Highlights for the Mustangs included the No. 1 doubles team of Darien French-Owen and Jeneal Carter winning 6-2, 6-1 over Shannon Ong and Kelsey Connel and Hallie Blatter and Sara Boye handling Mary Nelson and Kim Koshman with ease 6-1, 6-2.
Redmond golf notches 79th straight win
Despite playing without four of their top six players due to illnesses, the Redmond girls’ golf team defeated Roosevelt with ease 242-343 at Bear Creek Country Club on Thursday afternoon for their 79th consecutive Kingco match victory.
Medaling for the Mustangs was Kelly Kennewick with a 43, followed by Alicia Hooper (47) and Alicia Bies (49).
