Redmond’s Zach Abbruzza’s hot bat contributed in a big way to the Mustangs’ 5-3 4A Kingco Crest Division victory over Skyline at home on Thursday night.
The Gonzaga-bound senior, who went 4-for-4 on Tuesday, belted two home runs and drove in three against the Spartans, with junior Patrick McGrath lacing a 2-RBI triple in the third to put the Mustangs ahead for good.
Mustang starter T.J. Whidby recovered from a shaky start to pick up the win, allowing just two first-inning runs in four innings of work, with senior Michael Conforto striking out the side in the seventh to earn the save.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 2-0 in league play and 4-2 overall.
Mustang golfers victorious in Yakima
The Redmond High girls’ golf team edged out state rival Richland by one stroke, 341-342, at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima on Thursday, to win the Lee Dolquist Invitational for the fourth time in five years.
The Mustangs were led by junior Keira O’Hearn who fired a 79 for third place overall, followed by senior Kelly Kennewick with an 81 and fourth place.
Also scoring for the Mustangs were Stephanie Schoeppel (90) Peyton Halstead (91) and Mayakla Walker (92).
Redmond tennis sweeps Ballard
The Mustangs needed to win their matches quickly against Ballard on Thursday afternoon at home with the threat of oncoming rain, and Redmond did just that, nearly sweeping every game of singles action en route to a 6-0 team win.
Sarah Du, playing No. 1, No. 2 Raluca Ifrim and No. 4 Dana Simmons each were perfect in 6-0, 6-0 routs of their opponents, with No. 3 Sophia Xu giving up just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win.
In doubles action, Darien French-Owen and Jeneal Carter won 6-4, 6-1 and Marissa Craig and Sara Boye handily took their match 6-2, 6-2 before the No. 3 doubles match got rained out.
Overlake downs Mukilteo, nets first lacrosse win
Frost Cunningham scored four goals to lead Overlake to their first win of the season, 12-4, in Division I boys’ high school lacrosse action on Thursday at the Overlake School.
Overlake scored early and often, jumping out to an 8-2 halftime lead.
Barrett Genness added two goals and four assists and Nick Evan saved five goals for the Owls, who improved to 1-2-0 on the season.
