Prep Report: Abbruzza pitches no-hitter as Mustangs rout Wolves

Zach Abbruzza pitched a six-strikeout no-hitter in a 4A Kingco Crest Division matchup against Eastlake on Thursday night in a five-inning 11-0 Mustang blowout.

It was the Gonzaga-bound senior’s first win of the season after recently returning to the mound to rest a sore pitching arm.

On offense, Dylan Davis led the way with a 3-for-4 night at the plate with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored. Michael Conforto and Patrick McGrath also added two hits and an RBI in the rout.

With the win, the Mustangs improved to 10-1 in league play and 13-4 overall.

Redmond girls’ track wins tough double-dual

The Redmond girls’ track squad came out on top in a tough 4A Kingco double-dual meet against Issaquah and Woodinville, winning 81.5 to Issaquah’s 71 team points and Woodinville’s 36.5.

Winning for the Mustangs were Mandy Rusch in the 400 meters, sprinting a season-best 60 seconds flat, Holly Young (11 minutes, 46.8 seconds) just edging out Woodinville senior Maddie Graham (11:48) in the 3200 meters, and Ashley Martinez winning the 300 meter hurdles by a large margin, in 54.4 seconds.

The Mustangs’ star-studded 400 relay team of Bailey Whitaker, Amy Pumputis, Darcy Hardwick and Katherine Smiley (51 seconds) emerged victorious as did the 1600 relay team (Rusch, Pumputis, Allison Amaral, Keiko Montenegro) in 4:14.20.

In the field, the Mustangs won four of seven events: Jessica Kinssies in the shot put (35 feet, 2 inches) and the Discus (86-8), Katie Lord in the high jump (5-5, season-best), and Aliyah Steiner in the triple jump (31-1.5).

Highlights on the boys’ side included Miles Hille and Johnathan Stevens placing 1-2 in the 1600 meters once again, finishing in 4:31.1 and 4:32.4, respectively, and Cotter Boyle finishing the 400 meters in first in 52.9.

Overlake girls sneak by Cardinals

The Owl girls’ tennis team won both singles matchup in a 3-2 victory over Seattle Academy on Thursday night in a 1A Emerald City League tennis match.

Caroline Roush, playing No. 1 singles, beat Lauren Kronenberg 6-2, 6-2, and Julie Robbins had no trouble with Mackenzie Smith, winning 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 3 doubles team of Julia Wu and Kelly Hanschen won in a tiebreaker 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 to give the Owls the team victory.
