After a thrilling 3-2 shootout win in their state opener last week, the Overlake girls’ team traveled 300 miles to take on the Newport Grizzlies in Spokane last Saturday in the 1A state quarterfinals, losing 2-1 in overtime to fall short of a state semifinals berth.
The Owls fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but senior Kerri Smith tied the game up with a clutch goal off striker Adrianna Gildner in the 51st minute, with neither team able to score in the remainder of regulation.
In the second overtime period, Newport’s Ryen Nicholas scored the game-winner off an assist from Taylor Lewis, ending the Owls’ season.
With the win, Newport improved to 19-2-0 on the season while Overlake finished with a 15-5-0 record.
