Overlake’s Torvund takes second at state tennis championships

The Overlake School junior Trym Torvund earned his second straight silver medal at the 1A state championships in Yakima Tennis Center last weekend. For the second straight spring, Torvund advanced to the finals – but was outlasted by Daniel Ham of Charles Wright, 6-4, 6-3.

Torvund opened up the tournament with two easy 6-1, 6-0 wins before dropping the second set of a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Nick Marchi of Bush.

In doubles, the twin tandem of Marcus and Grant Munoz made it to the semifinals after 6-4, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-3 victories over teams from Cashmere and Freeman, but it was a team from Tonasket, Lee Leavell and Bret Hendrick, that ended their title hopes with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat.

The Munozs lost a tough first set in the 3rd/6th place final and went on to fall to Sam Thomsen and Bayard Blair of University Prep 7-5, 6-2 to place sixth.

As a team, the boys placed third in the state with 14 team points, behind the 18 of state-champion Charles Wright.

On the girls’ side, the Overlake doubles squad of Catherine Jessen and Emily Walter opened up with a 6-2, 6-0 win, but lost a tightly contested quarterfinals match to Tori Smith and Emily Vincent of Cascade (Leavenworth) 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

From there, Jessen and Walter did not give up another set, winning 6-3, 6-1 and then 6-3, 6-2 over teams from La Salle and Chelan to take the fourth place medals.

The Owls’ singles entry, Caroline Roush, reached the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Felina Razey of Zillah, but lost two consecutive matches to get eliminated.

The Owl girls tied for fourth in team totals with eight points, with Charles Wright completing the sweep of 1A tennis with the girls’ team win.
