Jesse Klug, one of the state’s top soccer players who led The Overlake School to a Class 1A state title in May, has signed to play for the North Sound SeaWolves, an Everett-based team that plays in the USL Premier Development League (PDL).

He is expected to be in uniform when the SeaWolves play their final home game season Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Seattle Sounders U23 team at Edmonds Stadium.

Klug, a former member of the Seattle Sounders U16 Academy team, decided to play for Overlake in the spring rather than for the Sounders and broke his own school record with 39 goals on the way to leading the Owls to the state title.

“He’s been training with us for a few weeks and he scores in every practice,” SeaWolves coach Alex Silva told the The Weekly Herald. “He knows how to finish, can really score. He’s young but he can play.”

Klug, an 18-year-old who graduated from Overlake School earlier this month, began practicing with North Sound in mid June as a way to stay in shape before heading to Bucknell University, where he will play soccer in the fall.

Klug said he was content practicing with the team, but obviously he made a strong impression with Silva and his coaching staff.

“I was more surprised,” Klug said of the signing in a phone interview with the Reporter. “I wasn’t expecting to play for them.”

Silva is a former assistant coach at Overlake to current head coach Bob Bristol, who encouraged the SeaWolves to consider adding Klug to the team.

“Bob called me and I knew coming from Bob that Jesse would be a good player,” Silva told the Weekly Herald. “And he is, he has a great final touch and knows what to do around the goal.”

The SeaWolves are 4-7 and in sixth place in the eight-team PDL Northwest Division.
