Overlake girls’ soccer team advances to state quarterfinals

The Owls made the most of their four-and-a-half hour bus ride to Lakeside High School in Nine Mile Falls, Wash. on Wednesday, emerging victorious against the Eagles, 5-1, to reach the Class 1A state soccer quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.

Overlake, making its fourth straight state trip, will go on another long trip to play at Okanogan Saturday at 11 a.m. with the winner advancing to next Friday’s state semifinals. The Owls, riding an 11-game unbeaten streak, improved to 15-1-3.

In what could have been the final game of the year for the senior-laden Owls, it was a trio of upperclassmen that game up big.

Senior midfielder Allison Risa opened up the scoring in the fourth minute with an unassisted goal, and forward Susannah Kelly scored off a feed from Tess Edenholm and Adrianna Gildner midway through the first half to make it 2-0.

Senior Maya Marder added to the offensive fireworks with goals in the 30th and 42nd minute before Lakeside finally got one in the 67th minute.

Risa responded in the 71st minute with her second goal off Edenholm’s third assist of the contest.
