Overlake girls’ soccer hits the road again, beats Okanogan to advance to semifinals

The Overlake School girls’ soccer team traveled nearly six hours over the snowy Cascades to play Okanogan in a 1A state soccer quarterfinal matchup last Saturday, and the Owls made the most of the long trip with a thrilling 1-0 victory.

Playing in freezing temperatures and on a snowy field, senior Allison Risa came up huge for the Owls with an early score in the 12th minute off a feed from Quinn Phillips. Goalkeeper Ceci Votta and the stingy Overlake defense came up with stop after stop to preserve the shutout.

With the win, the Owls improved to 16-1-3 and earned the right to take on Connell at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup this Friday in the state semifinals at 2 p.m.

Owl boys cap off super season with Tri-District title

The Overlake Owls polished off their first unbeaten season in school history in fine fashion and claimed the Tri-District championship with a 3-0 win over Seattle Christian at Sammamish High School last Saturday.

In the 16th minute, Trevor Partington scored and Hakan Yagiz added two more in the second half to put the game out of reach.

Senior Jesse Klug, who dominated the Emerald City League this season with 24 goals, played a role-reversal as he assisted all three of the Owls’ goals.

The win sent Overlake’s dream season record to 16-0-1 and earned them the No. 1 seed for the 1A state tournament, which begins this spring.
