Overlake’s stellar boys basketball season ended on Thursday night with a 77-58 loss to Mount Baker in the district tournament.
The Owls finished 16-5 overall and notched second place in the 1A Emerald City League standings.
Coach Justin Prohn said Overlake was a strong team and the players gave everything they had each game. He added that the Owls played in a tough district where six of the top 10 teams in the state competed and only three earned state berths.
“I really couldn’t be more proud of this group. They have exceeded expectations and always competed. It’s been a successful season and a very special group to coach,” Prohn said.
Prohn is also proud of the basketball culture they’ve built at the Redmond school, which features supportive parents and hard-working players.
“The seniors have helped establish that (culture) over their four years in the program, but all the players have bought in and we are on the cusp of doing something very special if we can continue to develop,” he said.
Highlights included games versus Bear Creek, winning the Friday Harbor tournament championship and notching victories over Lakeside on a trip to Spokane and Overlake’s last matchup with University Prep, in which the Owls played their most complete game.
Individually, LT Cosmos won his second consecutive league most valuable player award and Owen Friend joined him on the first team. Prohn said Katon Minhas, Tellier Lundquist and Zeyad Daher had exceptional seasons, and the rest of the team is young and has the potential to shine again next season. Cosmos averaged 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals a game.
Prohn noted that Cosmos is “one of the most dynamic and complete basketball players to ever wear an Overlake uniform. A college coach that takes a chance on this kid will not be disappointed. He does everything and is the ultimate competitor.”
Friend averaged 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks a game, Minhas averaged 11 points a game and Lundquist averaged 10 points a game and was a solid defender who snatched copious rebounds.
