The Mustang boys basketball team stayed red-hot Tuesday night with their fifth consecutive win, a 65-43 dusting of the Woodinville Falcons at home. Redmond set the tone early and jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter, one they would never relinquish.

The Redmond High School boys’ basketball team, ranked 7th in 4A, stayed red-hot Tuesday night with their fifth consecutive win, a 65-43 dusting of the Woodinville Falcons in a Kingco 4A matchup at home.

Redmond set the tone early and jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter, a lead it would never relinquish.

For the Mustangs, Leslie Ellis led with a game-high 22, followed by three others in double digits: Conner Floan (15), Jason Harrington (11) and Peter Hendron (10).

The win moved Redmond (5-2 league, 10-3 overall) within a half-game of the division lead held by Skyline (5-1, 10-3), and the team continues league play Friday night against Issaquah (4-3, 10-3).

The Mustangs, who have 11 of 13 rostered players listed as upperclassmen, are feeding off the notion that this is the final time they will ever play basketball together, according to head coach Jeff Larson.

“The real difference between now and November is that with this group of seniors, they are realizing that there is no next year,” he explained. “Sometimes I think kids can become desensitized a bit to competition. This group is realizing that there is no ‘next year’ together.”

The team also has a pivotal game against No. 4 Garfield, on the road, next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs currently are leading the league with a 6-1 record, but the Mustangs intend to approach the battle on an even keel.

“The Garfield game will be important simply because it is another Kingco game,” Larson said. “Our goal has always been to improve each week, be fortunate enough to make the playoffs, and be at your best at the end of the season … our number one goal is still to make sure we have fun playing basketball.”

Redmond High gymnasts hang tough against Woodinville

The Mustang gymnastics squad, led by senior Ally Garcia, put together some nice performances against Ballard, Garfield and a talented Woodinville team on Tuesday night at Woodinville High School.

Garcia won the beam event with a score of 8.9, and took third in both the floor (9.15) and all-around (32.95).

Kaylee Borms had a pair of fifths on the floor (8.85) and beam (8.3), and Chelsea Polk took seventh in the vault with a 8.3 and also took seventh in all-around.
