The Redmond High baseball team kept its perfect 4A Kingco record alive on Friday night at home with a 7-1 thrashing of Woodinville, before dropping a non-league contest to Shorewood on Saturday.
Mustang senior Zach Abbruzza made his first start of the season against the Falcons and looked sharp, going three innings of shutout ball while striking out three and scattering three hits, with relievers T.J. Whidby and Michael Conforto coming on to close out the game.
On offense, Abbruzza blasted a two-run shot as did Michael Conforto, who hit his fourth on the season.
After playing Friday night, the Mustangs had an early wake-up call the next morning to play Shorewood and fell to the second-ranked 3A team in the state, 7-3.
The Thunderbirds got off to a fast start, putting up three runs in each of the first two innings to build a lead that would hold up.
The Mustangs managed only two hits off Shorewood starter Henry McAree, with Colin McBride belting his first long ball of the season while scoring two of Redmond’s three runs.
Redmond’s overall record now stands at 12-3 and they next play Tuesday on the road against Inglemoor, winners of three straight.
Redmond fastpitch splits a pair
The Redmond High fastpitch team ran its 4A Kingco record to 3-1 on Friday night after a 9-3 win over the Spartans of Skyline High at home.
With the score knotted at 3-3, the Mustangs erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.
While Melissa White notched another quality start for the win, on offense Ashley Mitchell hit another home run, her fourth on the season, and Stephanie Gero had a 2-for-3 night with a double and an RBI.
The Mustangs (3-1, 6-1 overall) are a half-game back in the Crest Division, behind Eastlake and Newport, who are currently undefeated.
On Saturday, the team got the thrill of a lifetime as they played at the University of Washington Fastpitch Field against Lakeside from Nine Mile Falls, but lost 8-4.
Next up for the Mustangs is a league match against Roosevelt at Hartman Park on Tuesday night, first pitch at 6 p.m.
Redmond tennis falls to Falcons
Playing at Woodinville on Friday night, the Mustangs tennis team fell to the Falcons 5-2.
Highlights for Redmond included No. 1 singles Sarah Du beating Claire Dougherty 6-4, 6-1; and the No. 1 doubles team of Darien French-Owen and Janeal Carter winning a super tiebreak thriller 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2).
