The third-annual Mustang Open golf tournament, which was held at Bear Creek Country Club on Monday, Sept. 14, had 116 golfers participate to raise money for Redmond High School sports teams.
While final numbers are still pending, tournament chairman Tom Conway estimates that the event raised between $12,000 and $15,000.
“Girls’ golf sold over two thousand dollars in raffle tickets alone, with various local companies donating in the form of sponsorship,” said Conway, who added that Frederick’s Appliance Center of Redmond donated a $2,000 item for the raffle. “I think the net is going to be well exceeding the first two years, by a large margin.”
Conway made sure to point out that the tournament would not have been possible without the generosity of Bear Creek Country Club, where the Mustang golf teams have called their home course since the early 1990s.
“The fact that Bear Creek, a private entity, steps in every year and has had this relationship with the school for 15-20 years, is amazing,” Conway said. “They don’t make anything off it, but they set aside time slots for both the boys and girls to play their matches, and let them use the range.”
The tournament, which allowed participants to donate their entry fee or sponsorship towards a particular sport, was estimated to raise “six to seven thousand dollars” for football, according to Conway, with the girls’ basketball and golf teams also doing well, receiving between $2-3,000 each.
“In a difficult economic environment for families and schools, it is great to continue the positive progression this event has created,” Conway noted. “I think that the funds raised will be well used by the teams to help more kids be able to participate in their sport of choice.”
