Larson resigns as Redmond High boys’ basketball coach to take associate principal job

There will be a new associate principal at Redmond High School (RHS) next year — and a new boys’ basketball head coach.

Jeff Larson, a math teacher and head coach at RHS for the last eight years, resigned from his head coaching duties to focus on his new job as associate principal, which begins in the fall.

“I always said it would take a good reason to step down and this is a good reason,” Larson said of his new associate principal job. “I’m excited about helping the school in a larger capacity.”

In his eight years as head boys’ basketball coach, Larson compiled a 95-93 record and guided the Mustangs to two Class 4A state tournament appearances, including a fifth-place finish in 2009. Larson was an assistant coach for four years before becoming the head coach.

“While RHS is excited to have Jeff join the administrative team, his leadership of the basketball program will be greatly missed,” RHS athletic director John Appelgate said in Wednesday press release.

The search for Larson’s replacement is now underway and interested applicants are instructed to apply online at www.lwsd.org and forward a resume and cover letter to Appelgate at jappelgate@lwsd.org.

“If there’s a better place to coach high school basketball, I wouldn’t believe it,” Larson said.
