Ray Roberts is out and Steve Supple is in as the Lake Washington High School (LWHS) head football coach.

Earlier this month, Roberts, a Redmond resident, recently stepped down after two seasons with the Kangaroos and then this week, the school announced Steve Supple, a former Redmond and Eastlake defensive coordinator, will be Roberts’ replacement.

Roberts said via his Twitter account, “I enjoyed my time there and truly love the kids I coached. I wish them nothing but the best.”

According to Lake Washington Athletic Director George Crowder, Roberts resigned due to personal reasons, feeling he couldn’t devote the necessary time to the program to make it a success. Under Roberts the Kangs had two 1-8 seasons.

Supple, a special education teacher, will also join the LWHS staff, working in the building, which was a primary goal of LWHS Principal Brad Malloy and Athletic Director George Crowder.

“Our school is fortunate to be able to bring in a highly respected and well qualified teacher and coach into the building,” said Crowder in a press release from the school. “In addition, Coach Supple’s passion for football, his knowledge of the game and his commitment to constructing a winning program will allow the school to once again build a culture of pride surrounding our football team.”

Supple has 24 years of varsity coaching experience, beginning as a defensive coordinator at Redmond High School in 1997-98. During that time, the Mustangs were 17-3, going undefeated and winning the 4A Kingco championship in 1998. Supple joined the Eastlake staff as a defensive coordinator in 2001, helping the team to an undefeated season that year. After that, he spent two seasons with at Interlake High School, before rejoining the coaching staff at Eastlake.
