Inaugural Great Day of Play coming to Redmond, Sounders’ Zakuani to make guest appearance

The City of Redmond will celebrate the first Great Day of Play on Friday, August 19 from 3-7 p.m. at Redmond City Hall located at 15670 Northeast 85th Street. The health and fitness-promoting event will feature a youth 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a 5K race/walk, skateboard and fitness demonstrations, trampoline fun and a special appearance by Seattle Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani.

The health and fitness-promoting event will feature a youth 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a 5K race/walk, skateboard and fitness demonstrations, trampoline fun and a special appearance by Seattle Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani.

Zakuani, coming off a broken leg sustained in a game against the Colorado Rapids on April 22, is scheduled to give a brief presentation at 5 p.m. and will be available to sign autographs afterwards.

The basketball tournament begins at 2 p.m. is open to boys and girls entering grades 3 through 8, and will be held outdoors at the City Hall campus. Teams are limited to four players maximum and the entry fee is $75 per team. Pre-registration is online at www.redmond.gov/econnect.

The 5K course is along the paved Sammamish River Trail, with prizes in top categories awarded.

Pre-registration, at $30 per person, is done online at www.active.com under Redmond’s Great Day of Play. On-site registration is $35 and begins at 4 p.m., with the race beginning at 5:30. Registration is only $20 if done by July 31.
