When it was all over, Redmond Mustangs junior grappler Jeremy Hernandez stood alone at the top of the podium as a champion in his weight class at the Class 3A Region IV wrestling tournament on Feb. 10 in Spokane.
Hernandez, who went 3-0 at the tourney, pinned Mount Spokane’s Zach Clark in the 145-pound championship match. Hernandez will face Ingraham’s Simion Mayo-Carrillo in his first match of the Mat Classic Class 3A state wrestling tournament on Feb. 16 at the Tacoma Dome.
Redmond sophomore Carson Lui captured a second place at regionals in the 160-pound weight division, earning a berth at the Mat Classic. Lui will battle Bethel’s Josh Walker in his opening match on Feb. 16 at the Tacoma Dome.
On the Redmond girls’ side at regionals, sophomore Molly Williams took first at 110.
Williams and sophomore Leah Hiatt will compete in the 110-pound division at state along with sophomore Marina Montanez at 120. In their opening matches on Feb. 16, Williams will take on Kenzie Cormier of Enumclaw, Hiatt will battle Salyna Shotwell of Rogers-Puyallup and Montanez will tussle with Taylor Robbins of Hanford.
At the District 2 Sub-regional tournament, the girls placed second to champion Nathan Hale, 105-103.
Hiatt took second at 110, Montanez took second at 120, Shannon Curran took second at 105, Jovanna Diaz-Prudente took second at 145, Stephanie Osorio-Tristan took third at 115, Julie Medina took third at 135 and Talia Heywood took third at 155.
