Get fit with a Zen workout: ZenRock Fitness provides a holistic approach to working out

From fancy chandeliers to elegant Persian rugs, the ambiance at ZenRock Fitness is one-of-a-kind.

And, most importantly, it’s the kind of atmosphere that can spark a fitness reformation while developing a holistic approach to wellness, according to Mike Schauble, 30, who co-owns the unique workout studio with his wife, Petra Dumm, 28.

“We really have a different style to the way we set this up,” said Schauble, a 1997 Redmond High School graduate. “We set up a different kind of ambiance. We want people to feel comfortable.”

Because of its luxurious, intimate style, Schauble said clients are not self-conscious when they are training, which leads to a productive, stress-free workout.

The ZenRock Fitness workout, which ranges from $40-70 for each session, does not have the ingredients of a conventional gym. ZenRock, which has five personal trainers, including Schauble and Dumm, incorporates yoga, martial arts, meditation and strength conditioning. ZenRock also offers nutrition conseling with all training packages. Clients have their own personal trainer and their workout is by appointment only, Schauble said, adding that the club also offers partner/buddy training, which allows for cutting the cost in half.

“Everything we do is one-on-one training,” according to Schauble. “We do that so you are able to focus on yourself. It’s all about what each client needs.”

ZenRock features four training rooms, each with a unique look, feel and focus.

The main room is “a versatile multi-purpose romm, where we are able to have seminars and community meetings,” Schauble described.

There is also a room specially designed for yoga and martial arts.

“This simple but beautiful room features traditional Japanese Tatami mats and a heavy bag,” Schauble explained.

The third room is used as a private training room and features a set of Olympic training rings, which can be used for a variety of exercises. The back room is a larger room used for “one-on-one and couples’ training sessions,” Schauble said.

ZenRock’s state-of-the-art equipment includes free motion dual cable cross machines, Cybex Arc Trainers, Free Motion incline treadmills, Ergonomic free weights, Free Motion elliptical trainers, Free Motion recumbent bikes, Cybex stationary bikes, Olympic free weights, Concept II Rower and Plymoetric boxes.

Schauble, who started doing martial arts at the age of five, said ZenRock training is perfect for anyone who wants to improve their health and wellness. It’s also excellent training for athletes who want to avoid injuries, he said.

Everyone who comes into ZenRock gets a fitness evaluation and goals assessment and then the training program is developed from that information, Schauble said.

“Nobody has the same kind of program,” Schauble said. “We really try to take a multi-pronged approach and work on the overall health, as opposed to working with one aspect.”

When Schauble and Dumm, a 2000 Redmond High graduate who starred on the basketball court for the Mustangs, opened ZenRock about a year ago, they wanted to provide an alternative to the normal gym experience, while providing high-quality, intimate customer service.

“We asked the question, ‘Why can’t we bring really spectactular service and really make people feel they are wanted where they work out and also do it in a place where it looks really great and make it affordable?’”

So far, so good.

When ZenRock first opened it had only 10 clients. It now has grown to more than 100, Schauble said.

“It can always be better, we have a lot of room to grow,” Schauble noted. “We really want to be the answer to people’s wellness. When people come in, we really want them to feel that this is their oasis, their place to get away.”
