Bear Creek soccer teams ousted from state

Both the Bear Creek School boys and girls soccer teams were knocked out from state tournament action last weekend during the first round of play.

The Bear Creek girls lost in a shootout, 2-1, to Napavine at Centralia High School on Saturday afternoon, to close their year at a 9-5-3 record.

The No. 1-ranked boys, playing at Sammamish High in Bellevue on Saturday night, suffered a stunning upset at the hands of Providence Classical Christian from Lynnwood, 2-0.

“It was a disappointing end to our season but only because we have such high expectations for ourselves,” said head coach Chad Pohlman. “The season itself was one of the best we have ever had as we shattered just about every defensive and offensive record in our program.”

This year, the boys scored 66 goals while allowing just 11, including 12 shutouts by star goalkeeper Jamie Clough.

The boys’ team went undefeated until its last two contests of the year, a 1-0 loss to La Conner in the district finals and last Saturday’s season-ending shutout, finishing with a 16-2-0 record.

“I am extremely proud of our team for the way they competed throughout the season,” said Pohlman, whose team included 10 rostered seniors. “Losing is always disappointing, and tough to swallow, but the overall success of this team and season cannot be overlooked. It has been a real pleasure to coach this team.”
