After playing two days of golf, Morgan Cadigan was exhausted, but very satisfied.
That’s because she helped Bear Creek’s girls golf team snag its first 1B/2B state championship Tuesday and Wednesday at Oakbrook Golf Course in Lakewood. The Grizzlies had 36.50 points and St. John Endicott was second with 35.00 points.
“It was hard today with the pouring rain — but we pulled through,” Cadigan said on Wednesday. “We knew we had a good chance. We just played to the best of our ability and got the win.”
Cadigan was tops for Bear Creek with a third-place finish (91-97-188), Kiersten Sprick was eighth (92-110-202) and Gracie Matthews was 17th (109-112-221).
“It’s really exciting. I’ve been golfing with Morgan and Sarah (Witt) since freshman year and we’ve climbed the ladder. It’s a wonderful finish to senior year,” said Sprick, a senior along with Cadigan and Witt, who also qualified for state along with sophomores Matthews and Wendy Hsia.
The Bear Creek trio of Cadigan, Sprick and Matthews all advanced to the second day of competition with their best rounds on day one. Sprick notched a birdie on the par-five first hole on day one and rolled from there.
For Cadigan, notching a par following a triple bogey got her on track on day one.
“Every hole is a new game,” said Cadigan, noting that she went on a streak of pars to get in a groove.
With three girls playing on day two, Sprick said they were hopeful that victory was in their grasp because the other schools only had two players still in the tournament.
“That really gave us an edge,” said Sprick, adding that the rain caused the golfers to have higher scores on day two, but the Grizzlies prevailed and tasted victory.
Cadigan noted with a laugh that the girls all high-fived each other after winning the title, however, they had to reach up high to slap hands with tall co-coach Kent Diamond.
Experience at Oakbrook was key, said Sprick, who played the course last Saturday, joined her teammates for a round on Monday and then tackled the two-day tourney.
Staying calm on the course was important, as well.
“I’m usually a cool-headed golfer. I’ve learned to rebound from a bad hole or a really bad shot,” Sprick said. “It’s no use getting upset over a bad shot. You have probably 60 more shots, so hopefully you’re going to get a lot better.”
Bear Creek took third last season at state.
