The Grizzlies won a pivotal match against Tacoma Baptist on Thursday night in Tacoma 1-0 to overtake the Sea-Tac 2B League lead.

Jamie Clough was perfect in goal for the Grizzlies as their defense stepped up and shut out the potent Crusaders team, including standout Joshua Peters who has a league-leading 25 goals scored, for just the second time this season.

Bear Creek’s only goal was scored in the 68th minute off of a Payum Abtahi feed to Mark Phillips, his 14th goal of the year.

Both teams’ records now stand at 8-1-1 in league play, but with Bear Creek having the tie-break due to beating the Crusaders, the Grizzlies will lock up the league championship title with a win next Friday at home against Evergreen Lutheran (1-6-2, 2-8-2).

Mustang soccer upsets Skyline

The Redmond girls’ soccer team came away with a huge 4A Kingco Crest Division victory against the Spartans (8-2-0) on Thursday night at home, 2-1.

Brianne Bailey scored unassisted in the 18th minute, with Skyline’s Jackie Wilson tying up the game just as the first half wound down.

Using high-pressure defense, the Mustangs were able to stop Skyline while Kristen Haymen scored the game-winner off Amanda Dahl’s assist in the 65th minute to complete the upset.

Goalkeeper Jessica Larson held the offense-laden Spartans to just one goal after they had scored seven in its previous two games.

The win improved Redmond to 5-3-2 (7-3-2) with one game remaining, next Tuesday, Oct. 27 against league rival Eastlake.

Pumas pounced by Overlake

Playing at University Prep, the Overlake boys soccer team continued their decimation of the 1A Emerald City League with a 5-0 league win over the Pumas.

Sky Tweedie-Yates scored on a penalty kick in the first half, and then the Owls added four second-half goals as the Puma defense broke down late in the game.

Jesse Klug continued his torrid scoring pace with two goals, with Trevor Partington and Conor Crowley adding one score apiece. Joe Dolack and Dean Poplawski contributed one assist each in the win, which improved Overlake to 12-0-0 (13-0-0).

Owls battle to scoreless draw… again

For the second straight game, the lady Owls have failed to score a goal, but the good news is that their opponents haven’t either. On Thursday night at home playing against the league-leading Cardinals, both goalkeepers put a lock on the back of the net.

Talia Shulman for Seattle Academy and Ceci Votta for Overlake each got a hard-earned shutout. For the Cardinals, it was their first non-winning effort of the league season.

Overlake now stands at 10-1-2 (12-1-2) and Seattle Academy is now 12-0-1 (12-1-1).

Redmond volleyball outlasts Roosevelt

It doesn’t get any more exciting than Wednesday night’s 4A Kingco league volleyball matchup pitting the Mustangs against the Roughriders at home, as the green and gold won 3-2 in a tiebreak.

The two evenly-matched teams, which both had just three wins on the season, began with a tight 26-24 Mustang win that went into extra points.

Roosevelt responded with two wins, 25-14 and 25-23, before Redmond turned the tables in a must-win game four, pulling out its own 25-23 win to set up a first-to-15 tiebreak.

Both teams traded points early before the Mustangs took it to the Roughriders at the end, 15-13.

The win improved Redmond to 4-5 (5-5) on the year while Roosevelt fell to 3-7 (5-8).
