The Bear Creek School boys’ basketball team took a step closer to a Class 2B state berth with a 74-38 walloping of Seattle Lutheran last Thursday night at The Bear Creek School in a Tri-District playoff game.
The unusual game began with poor shooting by the home squad as the Saints jumped out to a 20-10 lead after the first quarter, but from then on it was all Grizzlies.
Bear Creek kicked into high gear and outscored the Saints, 63-18, in the final three quarters to earn the runaway win.
Senior Jamie Meyer scored a game-high 25, while Lucas Peterson added 18 and Kyle Blankenbeckler put in 13.
The Grizzlies improved to 21-1 with the win and will play Life Christian on Tuesday night at Chief Leschi School at 6:30 p.m., with the winner guaranteed a state berth.
Lady Grizzlies one win away from state
The Bear Creek School girls’ basketball team lost their Tri-District opener to Darrington 62-36, last Thursday but rebounded with a defense-driven 31-18 win over Seattle Lutheran on Saturday in a loser-out contest.
The Grizzlies (15-7) advance to a loser-out, winner-to-state game Friday night against the loser of the Evergreen Lutheran-Tacoma Baptist game, which takes place on Tuesday night. The do-or-die game will be at Chief Leschi School in Puyallup Friday at 4:45 p.m.
Overlake girls to open Tri-District tourney Tuesday
The Lady Owls routed Bush 65-33 in a seeding game last Thursday night to advance to the Tri-District playoffs this week.
Senior point guard Maya Marder and senior forward Jessica Elliott both notched double-doubles in the game, with Marder leading the team with 15 points and 14 assists, and Elliott notching 10 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman forward Vanessa Rosato scored a career-high 14 as the Owls improved to 12-10.
The Owls’ Tri-District opener will be at Lynden Christian on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
