TOP RETURNERS

• Sr. Nikolaj LaCour, WR/DB: Sure-handed receiver had a great spring and summer after dislocating his shoulder late last year.

• Sr. Conner Floan, TE/DL: 6-foot-5, 235-pounder replaces Div. I prospect James Boker. Has tons of potential and athletic ability.

• Sr. Gabe Wiliams, OL/LB: Returning starter gives 100 percent on the field, a “warrior” according to Coach Chandler.

• Sr. Keegan Farley, C: Third-year starter has big-game experience, and a great attitude.

• Sr. Michael McClelland, OL/DL: One of the team’s vocal leaders, has an infectious enthusiasm for the game.

KEY NEWCOMERS

• Jr. Brady Anderson, QB: Started a couple games for Michael Conforto last year, much improved but will have a steep learning curve playing in 4A Kingco.

• Soph. Ian Seabrooks, OL/DL: One of the biggest sophomores in the league at 6-5 and 300 pounds, a raw but physically imposing talent.

DID YOU KNOW?

Coach Chandler’s most memorable football game was against Inglemoor in 2001, when his Eastlake Wolves were down 21-0 five minutes into the first quarter and then scored 45 unanswered points to win 45-21 in a torrential rainstorm. He said on the victory: “What made it memorable is that it was the players that provided the leadership. The turnaround came from the players and their belief in each other.”

QUOTABLE

“Last year I really wanted the seniors to have a good experience, and I think we did that. The kids really finished strong. (This year) we are really focusing hard on fundamentals and getting kids to develop a football I.Q. We also really need to create a football culture that kids want to be a part of. Only about half of the ninth graders that play (junior football) come out and play their sophomore year. We’re losing 20-25 potential players, and I’m not sure why that is. Hopefully that pipeline starts to fill up.” – Mustangs’ head coach Jeff Chandler

BIG GAME:

• Friday, Sept. 23 vs. Eastlake: A much-anticipated rivalry matchup at home against the Wolves, Coach Chandler’s former team, is a winnable game for the Mustangs. A victory here in their division opener would set the tone for a solid season and hopefully a playoff berth.
