STEM High School designs ‘Schools Under 2C°’ program

The Redmond Tesla STEM High School has designed a program to help schools come into compliance with the United Nation’s Paris Accords.

The program is called “Schools Under 2C°” and aims to reduce more than 4,300 pounds of CO2 emissions, far more than the one-ton goal that was previously set. The organization also developed an app to track transportation of students to and from school and to monitor changes in carpooling and other green transportation options, a release from the Lake Washington School District said.

The app is in beta testing and will be released to the public this month. The group also marched in the Seattle March for Science on April 22 and the Seattle March for Climate Change on April 29 with the goal of adding more schools to the program.

The “Schools Under 2C°” is a student-led initiative from the Tesla STEM High School.

“What a lot of people overlook is that climate change is one of the biggest human rights issues in history,” Co-President Anne Lee said in the release. “Even though developed countries emit most of the world’s greenhouse gases, developing countries are the ones that face the most drastic consequences.”

Lee and Michael Levenkov are co-presidents and several other students are also officers in the organization.
