The event, organized by Rose Hill Junior High School teacher Rodney Thornley, was intended to give local Hispanic youths an opportunity to participate in some high-speed, thrilling water sports. LSWSC volunteers provided the boat, skiis, inflatable tubes and instruction, Thornley said. “All they had to bring was a bathing suit and a towel,” he said. “They had a great time. It was a perfect day.” Following the fun on the water, the kids were treated to some free pizza and refreshments. Thornley, who has been volunteering for the LSWSC for 36 years, said he organizes the event every year for kids — and adults — who may not get the opportunity to experience water sports. During a previous year, the event was designed for blind adults, but most of the time it is held for inner-city and minority youths, Thornley said.
