On Thursday, the Redmond Whole Foods Market’s fishmonger Ted Warren will battle it out to earn the title of the most skilled and most knowledgeable fishmonger in the Pacific Northwest Region.

The competition, which will be at the Interbay Whole Foods Market at 2001 15th Ave. W. in Seattle, is part of a national Fishmonger Face-Off competition and contestants will compete to earn a spot at the Aspen Food and Wine Classic on June 16.

Thursday’s event will be from 1-3 p.m. and competitors will represent stores in Portland, the greater Seattle area and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Customers are welcome to join in the fun and sample grilled sustainable seafood, spin the “Captain’s Prize Wheel” and answer questions on sustainable seafood.

Since Earth Day this year, Whole Foods Market became the first national retailer to stop carrying red-rated, wild-caught seafood. Red-rated indicates that a species is suffering from overfishing or current fishing methods harm other marine life or habitats. The ratings are determined by nonprofit industry authority Monterey Bay Aquarium.
