Redmond police arrested a 29-year-old Auburn man who they believe was responsible for six different bicycle thefts on or near the Microsoft, Corp. campus over the last month.

With the help of Microsoft security, police found the man at around 8:30 a.m. on a bike trail near the corner of 130th Avenue Northeast and State Route 520. Officers questioned the man, who told police he stole the six bicycles “for extra cash to pay bills and because his mother had been sick,” according to police spokesman Jim Bove.

All six bicycles were recovered and returned to the owners, Bove said.

The arrest was a collaborative effort by Redmond detectives, Microsoft security and alert residents who promptly reported the crimes, Bove said.

Microsoft security called Redmond police at 8:14 Wednesday morning to report that they saw a man who fit the description who was believed to be responsible for three bicycle thefts on the Microsoft campus and three more at the nearby Overlake Transit Center, Bove said.

Officers responded, searched the area and found the man on the bike trail, where he confessed to the crimes.

“This is a great example of what can happen when people report crimes no matter how large or small, keep a record of their valuables and of course Microsoft did a great job of keeping us in the loop as it became a problem,” Bove said.
