Eleven Redmond mothers received a permit today to hold a rally on Sunday in the City Hall commons to pray for the 276 Nigerian girls who were abducted from their school in Chibok by Islamic extremists on April 14. According to Associated Press stories, the girls are reportedly set to be sold into marriage to militants for $12 each.

Led by Redmond’s Sharice Belikoff, who’s of South African descent, the rally will take place from 4-5 p.m., according to local resident Terry Scott, who teaches African American history at the University of Washington and U.S. history at Bellevue College. She’s getting the word out today about the rally, which could attract 200-300 attendees.

The organizers are reaching out to local church leaders of all faiths today to invite them to speak, pray and read poems at the rally.

It’s a “united effort,” said Scott, who added, “And it’s a show of support as mothers. It’s painful talking about it — what if it happened to our children during school?”

Sunday is also Mother’s Day and Scott said they want to support the kidnapped girls’ mothers, who don’t get to be with their daughters on that day.

The mothers also want to keep the situation in public view and hope that government officials will work diligently to get the girls safely back home.
