From 3-4:30 p.m. on Feb. 9, the Redmond Library at 15990 N.E. 85th in Redmond will be holding Education Under Fire, A Documentary and Conversation.
The event is part of a campaign developed to address the Iranian government’s denial of the right to education for idealogical and religious reasons.
Attendees will watch a 30-minute documentary, also entitled “Education Under Fire,” which focus on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s three-decade long policy of denying members of the Baha’i community the right to attend any institute of higher education. The Iranian Baha’i community began an informal university in which classes were taught in the homes of Baha’i academics. This soon became the Baha’i Institute for High Education (BIHE). In May 2011, the Iranian government raided dozens of homes, confiscating computers and materials and detaining 18 professors and administrators.
The goal of the Education Under Fire, which is co-presented by Amnesty International, is to spread awareness of this issue as well as mitigate the effects of such discriminatory policies.
