Sandy Hargraves, a math teacher at Redmond High School (RHS), has been selected as a winner of the Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching, as announced by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
Hargraves is one of 22 teachers selected from all of the high schools in the United States and Canada for this international recognition, and is the only teacher from Washington selected. He was nominated for the award by RHS students and math team Sam Keller, Stefan Mellem and Jonathan Shi, who were among the 60 highest scoring American Mathematics Contest 12 (AMC 12) teams in the United States, Canada, APO/FPO and U.S. Embassy Schools.
As a winner, Hargraves receives a cash award, a letter of recognition, a Sliffe Award Winner pin, a certificate from the MAA, a one-year intuitional membership in the MAA and twenty subscriptions to Math Horizons for distribution to students.
The Edyth May Sliffe Award program is designed to recognize and reward outstanding teachers for their efforts in the development of mathematical talents of high school students.
