While events and gatherings are restricted due to COVID-19, the city of Redmond events are going virtual and bringing online activities to the community.

This summer’s virtual event offerings will include Derby Days and So Bazaar.

Derby Days was originally scheduled for July 10-11 and has now been reformatted as “Derby Days: 2020 Virtual Edition.” This virtual event will give opportunities for the Redmond community to participate in the Derby Days tradition while remaining physically distant between June 9 and July 11.

Signature elements like the Derby Dash 5K, community bike races, bike-decorating virtual parade and the Derby Do-Gooder scholarship will be celebrated during this window.

“Redmond events are a cherished way we celebrate our community and the unique experiences that unite us,” said Mayor Birney in a city release. “This year, it is more important than ever that we provide an opportunity for the community to come together, even if we must do so virtually. I look forward to the day we can all see one another again in person and celebrate everything that makes Redmond such a wonderful place to live.”

Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 Derby Do-Gooder Scholarship award, presented by Waste Management. Currently in its sixth year, the Derby Do-Gooder Scholarship will be awarded as a part of the Derby Days: 2020 Virtual Edition.

The scholarship will award $1,500 to a high school senior in Redmond who has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to local community service. In addition to the scholarship funds, the recipient will be honored through a presentation on social media from Birney.

“For Waste Management, this is a great way to be an engaged community partner,” said Robin Freedman, Waste Management’s senior manager of Public Sector Solutions in a city release. “We consider it a privilege to serve the city of Redmond and to sponsor the Do-Gooder Scholarship. The scholarship is a wonderful way for Waste Management to recognize students who help build our community and advance sustainability.”

The Derby Do-Gooder Scholarship is one of several community partnerships highlighted by this year’s events. A partnership with local bike shop Edge and Spoke will create a virtual community bike ride that will encourage cyclists of all levels to ride their bikes and receive a commemorative token.

Other community partnerships are still being confirmed and will create opportunities for the community to celebrate.

So Bazaar will offer virtual multi-disciplinary arts on Thursday, Aug. 13 starting at 7 p.m. This year’s theme, Hindsight, will virtually feature artists from So Bazaar’s past, offering timely inspiration for the future through dance, food, film, music, performance, poetry and visual art.

The scholarship application deadline is June 30, with a recipient announcement date of July 11.
