The VALA Art Center will present an installation of art exploring Redmond’s rich historic downtown on Wednesday.
“Redmond: A Visual History” kicks off with a free artist reception from 6-8 p.m. at VALA Art Center, 7303 164th Ave. N.E. The collection will remain on display at VALA through Aug. 30 and will also be at the Redmond Library through Sept. 27.
Artist Jacqui Calladine has curated an installation of artwork from nine artists who will share their interpretation of Redmond’s history through contemporary art. Travel through time and explore what Redmond looked like when it was first founded more than a century ago. Learn about the city’s railroad history, and enjoy the beauty of several watercolor renditions of historical buildings. View several authentic historical artifacts while admiring the hard work of local artists.
The nine artists completed a walking tour of the Redmond landmark buildings led by local historian Tom Hitzroth, sketching and taking photographs along the way. The artists were then asked to create work inspired by the tour and were given the opportunity to further research Redmond history by visiting the offices of the Redmond Historical Society. The installation aims not only to provide a platform for artists to show their work, but also to raise awareness of local history.
“Traversing Eternity”, an installation by local artist Anna Macrae, will be shown at the VALA Art Center through Aug. 30. On July 25, VALA will hold a special event to inspire conversation about the artwork. Join Macrae at Art Talk & Wine Night from 6-8 p.m.
