The Redmond Historical Society and the City of Redmond will hold an opening reception and viewing of the exhibit Moving Forward, Looking Back: Washington’s First Women in Government on Tuesday from 6-7:30 p.m. in the City Hall lobby at 15670 N.E. 85th St.
The exhibit was produced by the Washington State Heritage Center, which highlights the first women elected to major public offices following Washington’s 1910 enactment of women’s right to vote. This 16-panel exhibit will be at Redmond City Hall lobby through May 31 to honor the 2010 Centennial of women’s suffrage in Washington and to celebrate history during Redmond’s 2012 Centennial.
According to the Washington State Heritage Center, “since 1913, 14 pathfinders have pushed the limits, stood for election and won offices never before held by women. Their landmark elections show progressive Washington – a unique state that empowered women with the fundamental right to vote a decade before the nation; the only state with a sitting female governor and two women in the U.S. Senate.”
