Since May 2008, nearly 20,000 Redmond residents or employees have been using alternative forms of transportation and logging them on GOrtrip.com, reducing 2 million vehicle trips in the city.
R-TRIP, Redmond Trip Resource and Incentive Program, is an online commute management system that allows users to log their alternative commutes when they travel to work by any means except driving alone, such as biking, walking, carpooling, vanpooling or taking the bus. The system calculates statistics for vehicle trips saved, carbon dioxide reduced, fuel saved and miles of alternative commutes logged. Statistics can be viewed by the individual user, by employer or system-wide.
As of May 9, the system-wide statistics include:
• 19,974 GOrtrip.com users
• 2,032,231 vehicle round trips saved
• 57,226,880 pounds of Co2 reduced
• 2,609,047 gallons of fuel saved 60,790,800 miles of alternative commutes logged (equal to circling the earth 2,441 times)
“R-TRIP’s results are like having almost three freeway lanes of traffic magically disappear during rush hour,” said R-TRIP business coordinator Jill Smith.
New participants in R-TRIP earn a one-time $50 incentive for taking 50 alternative commutes. Any Redmond resident or employee can try bus commuting for free for three months or receive vanpool subsidies, in addition to participating in monthly drawings and accessing many online resources.
Soon, Redmond residents will track personal trips and participate in local trip reduction promotions using the program’s new Residential Trip Log scheduled to launch early summer.
